The Katzenelenbogen-Smelyansky-Gershman Family

This information was donated by ES

My ancestors never left Russia, everyone lived in Vitebsk, then in Moscow where I was born. I went to France to study when I turned fifteen. I have a degree in International Trade. I've been living in France ever since. I am married to a Russian. We have two children, 22- and 16-years-old.

The Katzenelenbogen family owned a drugstore selling paintings, glue, etc. Most of these families moved to Moscow and to St. Pétersbourg, Russia after 1917 (or just before that year).

I am from the Moscow branch.

I don't know what were the occupations of my great-grandfather and his siblings. I do know that they all were intellectuals; at least one of them was a doctor.

My grandfather (Gershman branch) and my grandmother (Đšatzenelenbogen branch) were engineers. My grandfather constructed thermal power plants in Russia. My father's name was Alexandre Smelyansky; his father was briefly married to my grandmother.

My father was a translator (from French to Russian), and then he worked in the publishing business, and then as a PR person in Moscow. When my father developed cancer, he moved to Israel ten years ago, but couldn't be cured and passed away eight years ago. After he passed away, my mum came to live with us in France.
